Let me also ask to be thorough, when you first place a CD or (especially DVD movies) into the drive, do you hear the drive spin up at all, and is there any LED light for when it's reading? If this were my computer, I'd right-click and "Uninstall" the drive from the Device Manager, then go to the manufacturer's website and download the newest edition of their driver again. Even if it's the version you already had, reinstalling it may fix whatever issue it had.
